What Is A Guarantor?

A guarantor is an individual who agrees to take responsibility for repaying a loan if the borrower is unable to do so.
This role provides additional security for the lender, as it reduces the risk associated with lending funds by ensuring that someone else will step in to cover the repayment if necessary. Guarantors have a strong financial standing and a solid credit history, which helps to reassure the lender that the loan will be repaid.

Who can be a guarantor?


  • Must be at least 25 years of age and complete guarantor application.

  • Must be a resident of Southern Arizona including Pima, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties.

  • Guarantors need to be currently employed or have income proof to demonstrate financial means to repay loan if necessary.

  • Guarantors must show proof of identification such as a Drivers License, Social Security card or State Identification.

  • Guarantors must agree to credit check and have very good credit.

  • Certain limitations apply to who can serve as a guarantor. For example, married couples are considered as one borrower, so a spouse cannot act as a guarantor.

What are the steps to become a guarantor?


  • Must complete guarantor application. If married or separated, spouse must sign application.

  • Interviewed either in person or by telephone.

  • Must have all paperwork notarized if they cannot attend interview in person.

  • Must show proof of identification such as a Drivers License, Social Security card or State Identification.

  • Guarantors must sign Authorization Form providing credit card to secure loan and authorizing the use of the credit card for payment if loan defaults.

  • Guarantors must agree to credit check and have very good credit.

To be approved to support a loan, guarantors need to have good credit, a stable income and be at least 25 years of age. Guarantors cannot have any current activity with Tucson Jewish Free Loan either as borrowers or guarantors. Guarantors must be willing and able to repay the loan if the borrower is unable to do so. Guarantors must complete the guarantor application and be interviewed.

No, married couples are considered one borrower therefore a spouse cannot be a guarantor on a loan.
