Thoughts from the Executive Director....
It may seem like Tucson Jewish Free Loan is simply about interest-free financial assistance. But when I reflect upon this photo from 1936, I realize it's about so much more. The man on the left is my great grandfather, Aaron. He came to this country with very little, and he got a job as a dishwasher at the Penn Diner across from Penn Station in New York City. By the time this picture was taken in 1936, he owned the diner. The tall guy in the middle is Aaron's then 19-year-old son, my grandfather, Seymour. Seymour, or as I knew him, Pop-Pop Sy, learned the restaurant business from his father and went on to own his own establishment, OKeefe's Bar and Grill in the 1970s.
I can't say for sure that my great grandfather received an interest-free loan from Hebrew Free Loan of NY because their records don't go back that far, but it's certainly possible! What I do know is that these men worked hard, scrimped and saved, so their descendants....me....would never experience poverty. I'm grateful to them because they didn't just provide for future generations, they taught me a thing or two about opportunity.
Opportunity is what TJFL is about for me. We help create opportunities for families to prosper and thrive. And someday their children, and their children's children can proudly show photos of their great grandparents who helped unlock opportunity and prosperity for their future generations.
